Proposal to Amend

the Upper School Student Council Constitution

Student Group Representative Proposal:

(1) That the following paragraph of Article III, Section 3 be deleted:

 

Student Group Representatives:

  • Student groups interested in participating in the Policy Board shall complete a registration form

  • Student Council will randomly select five student groups from the pool of registered groups

  • The five student groups will elect a representative who commits to attending at least 50% of the Policy Board meetings in a year

 

(2) That the section above be replaced with the following:

 

Student Group Representatives

  • Student Council will designate a maximum of five (5) categories that reflect the different aspects of the OES Mission. These categories will be known as Mission Groups.

  • Each student group will complete a registration form and register under the Mission Group that reflects its core purpose.

  • A self-nominated member of each Mission Group will be elected by the other members of that group.

 

Student Body President Proposal

(1) That the following paragraphs of Article V, Section 2 be deleted:

Section 2. Election: After Board elections but before the end of the school year, self-nominated, full-time Board members will have the opportunity to run for Student Body President on a specific timeline established by Student Council each year.

 

Requirements: Student Body President candidates will do the following to qualify:

  • produce and publish a written statement of 250 words or less

  • make a speech to the Upper School student body

  • participate in a public debate with other candidates

 

Vacated Positions and Special Elections: After the Student Body President has been elected, the Board position vacated by the President will be filled through a special election for the group represented by that position (e.g., the dorms, a grade level, or a club). Only candidates who ran in the original election for that position will be eligible to run a second time.

 

(2) That the section above be replaced with the following:

 

Section 2. Election: After the Policy Board and Community Board elections, a self-nominated member of the Upper School who complies with the following requirements will be elected by the student body:

  • other requirements as Student Council sees fit

  1. the one point some people have been having problems with: “other requirements as Student Council sees fit”
    this is vague and seems like a blank check clause for whatever powers StuCo wants to take in controlling the election in the future
