The OES Sports Leadership class has become a very important and highly regarded program despite only being a recent addition to the after school offerings here in the upper school.
The program is spearheaded by Associate Athletic Director Missy Smith, who, now on the 4th year of the program, has created a polished class featuring Jeff Janssen’s book, “The Team Captain’s Leadership Manual” as well as guest speakers from around the OES community.
Regarding the purpose of the class, Missy wrote, “Asking student-athletes to be leaders without preparing them for the responsibility is unfair.” She believes that this class could be a solid step towards teaching these skills and responsibilities. By self selecting into this group, students are presented with the opportunity to pursue these leadership roles as well as the core skills that will allow them to be successful in their teams. Missy summed up this idea by saying, “The instruction, encouragement and practice provided to leaders, should be at the same level as what is given to athletes before they compete.” This 10 class program succeeds in this regard by providing students with all three of these essential parts of the learning process.
Overall this program has been received very well in the student athlete community, and at the very least, both Soccer and Lacrosse, have shown very tangible improvements in the leadership and atmosphere within sports teams, creating a more positive and higher quality experience for all.
The leadership class is held after sports practices from 6:30 – 8 PM and always includes dinner. If you have any interest in joining, here is a list of the remaining dates:
During the Fall season, the remaining classes will be held Tuesday nights on: Oct. 18th, Nov. 1st, 8th, 29th
During the Winter season, the class will be held Monday nights on: Dec. 5th, 12th, Jan. 9th, 23rd, 30th
