This past weekend, I saw, Call Me by Your Name, a beautiful coming-of-age film packed with passion and heartbreak.
For this week’s installment of The Reel, I was planning on writing an article about the Golden Globes, but I realized that I haven’t seen several of the nominated films since many of them have only debuted in select cities. So instead, I will be focusing on Luca Guadagnino’s newest feature, Call Me by Your Name. The film takes place in northern Italy during the summer of 1983 and follows the life of a 17 year-old named Elio (played by Timothée Chalamet). When an American Student, Oliver (Armie Hammer), arrives to intern for Elio’s father, the two form a special relationship.
Being a cinematography junkie, the film left me in shambles. The DP, Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, shows his masterful craft as several of the shots fully embrace the lush beauty of Crema, Italy. The lighting and coloring of the film is saturated with gorgeous tones that go hand in hand with the 80s costume design. In fact, one of the reasons I loved the film so much is because of how immersive it was. Whether it was the installment of 80s pop legends like The Psychedelic Furs songs, or Elio’s collection of Talking Heads merchandise and Lacoste polos, I felt like I was in the villa during the entire 132 minute run time. But the obvious reason why the film is so mesmerizing is because of the magnificently nuanced acting of Chalamet and Hammer. There are so many tiny moments throughout that contribute to the complexity of their respective roles. After having spent 2 hours with the two, I was devastated as their journey reached its conclusion.
In the hundreds of movies I’ve seen, not one has evoked more happiness, sadness, and everything in between, than Call Me by Your Name. It is an instant classic and is clearly the best film of 2017 in my estimation. I recommend that you all watch it as soon as possible.
