An Aardvark Among Cardinals

by Luke Morissette

Here is a brief description of what has been a fantastic start to the football season for our own Charles Willmott.

Through all the success of OES’s Volleyball, Soccer, and cross country teams, what can be forgotten is the OES athletes that compete with different schools. One of these athletes has made his presence known among the Oregon High school Sports community. Two weekends ago Charles Willmott 21’ was named Phil’s Meat Market Player Of the Game after a fantastic performance at Canby. Not only did Willmott have an interception, seven tackles, and 251 all-purpose yards, but he also scored a 62-yard game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter giving his team the lead and eventually the win. I spoke to Willmott about the game-winning play and he said, “It was a great play call by Coach Dawson. I knew if I got the defender to bite on the wheel route I would have an easy scoring opportunity.” Willmott’s confidence in his coach and himself proved viable as he pulled off the most important play of the game.

Willmott’s success has by no means come out of thinner. Last season Charles was named 2nd team all PIL as a mere sophomore. Along with his personal success, Charles’ team is also coming off of a great previous season. They earned themselves a PIL league championship and also closely competed with eighth-ranked Central Catholic until the final whistle before their season was ended.

Willmott and his teammates look to build off of their past success in this 2019 season. After a tough loss at Southridge this past Friday, where Willmott still totaled 136 all-purpose yards, 8 tackles, and two touchdowns, the Cardinals are looking to bounce back. With a record of 1-1, Lincoln will be facing off against Franklin this Friday at 7:00 pm in their home opener. Will Willmott dazzle us all with more late-game heroics? The best way to find out is to be there as it happens. I highly recommend that all of you come out to Lincoln high school tomorrow and support our Aardvark!
