Broadway has reopened and touring musicals are back! Here are the musicals that will be coming to Portland:
Earlier in the fall, Broadway reopened, and touring musicals resumed. Jesus Christ Superstar and Mean Girls have already cycled through Portland, but there are still many more to come next year.
The Band’s Visit
January 4 – 9
Written by David Yazbek and Itamar Moses, The Band’s Visit tells the story of a band who accidentally goes to the wrong town but manages to make a great impact. The musical has won ten Tonys and one Grammy.
February 8 – 13
Anastasia was composed by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. It follows Anya, a woman who cannot remember much of her past, on a journey to find her true identity.
April 13 – May 1
Written by Lin Manuel Miranda, Hamilton is a modern musical about the life of the founding father Alexander Hamilton. Due to its popularity, Hamilton will put on 24 shows and stay in Portland a week longer than other productions.
May 31 – June 5
Pretty Woman was written by Garry Marshall and J. F. Lawton, and its music was composed by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. The musical is based on the 1990 movie, in which a sex worker and a businessman fall in love.
June 21 – 26
Cats was created by the composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, who has written other notable works such as Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar. Although the movie adaption was disastrous, Cats is considered to be a classic within the musical theater world.
July 19 – 24
Hadestown is a popular musical written by Anaïs Mitchell. It has won eight Tonys and tells the tragic story of Orpheus and Eurydice.
